Pros and cons of living in Argentina: the 2026 evidence, side by side

General information, not legal, immigration or tax advice. Rules, exchange rates and prices change and every case has its own details. Before you pay, sign or apply for residency, check the current rules with an Argentine notary (escribano), lawyer or accountant.

Quick answer What counts as a pro or a con depends on the person: budget, health, language and the currency of income. Dated evidence on the downside side: inflation of 33.4% over 12 months to September 2026 (INDEC) and, since August 12, 2026, advance payment or insurance for non-emergency care for foreigners without permanent residence at national hospitals (Resolution 1066/2026). On the upside side: the World Happiness Report 2026 ranks Argentina 44th of 136 countries and EF's 2025 index ranks it 26th for English. Each survey is one organization's measure. The table below sets both sides next to each other and gives no score.

Terms used: INDEC is the national statistics institute, ARCA is the tax and customs agency, BCRA is the central bank, a prepaga is a private health plan (OSDE 210 is one plan), DNI is the national ID card, CUIT is the tax ID that replaced the CDI, CUIL is the labor tax ID, CGT is the main union confederation, a DNU is a decree of necessity and urgency, and a Resolución is a ministry resolution. MEP and CCL are legal dollar rates traded through securities, the CCL with the dollars delivered abroad. Comunas are the City's administrative districts, Argenprop is a property listings site and Fundar is an Argentine policy research center. Dollar figures that are conversions use ARS 1,535 per US dollar, the Banco Nación selling rate on October 9, 2026 (El Cronista), and are rounded arithmetic. At the buying rate of ARS 1,485 they are about 3.4% higher.

What are the disadvantages and advantages of living in Argentina?

Each row pairs a theme with the dated evidence for each side. The pairing is by topic, so a cell on one side does not answer the cell on the other.

Downside (reasons cited against moving), with evidence Upside, with evidence
Prices and imports. INDEC reported 1.9% inflation for September 2026 and 33.4% over 12 months. Infobae (September 21, 2026) described roughly 30% "inflation in dollars" over the year (12 months to August; detail below). Numbeo's Purchasing Power Index is 51.79, labeled low. Fundar's index (Infobae, July 8, 2026) put Argentina at the Latin American average in March 2026, dearer than the region in restaurants, clothing, communications, recreation and home equipment, with transport dearer since April. ARCA's courier regime gives a USD 400 personal-use franchise per import, usable up to 5 times a year, with duty on the part above USD 400. Prices. Numbeo, a user-submitted site, lists a Cost of Living Index of 45.44, labeled low (country page updated October 12, 2026; the index is relative to a baseline city, with New York City at 100). Fundar's index put Argentina below the regional level in food, health, education and housing in March 2026.
Healthcare. Since August 12, 2026, foreigners without permanent residence must show insurance or pay in advance for non-emergency care at national hospitals (Resolution 1066/2026). Medicare does not apply overseas (US State Department). Healthcare. Permanent residents, shown by a DNI marked "residente permanente", are not subject to that charge. Numbeo's user-submitted Health Care Index is 67.84, labeled high.
Paperwork and payments. The CUIT replaced the CDI from March 2, 2026. Banks usually ask for a DNI plus a CUIL or CUIT, and passport-only applicants face a longer process (Rio Times). Some US ATM cards fail at certain machines (State Department). Facts that bear on this: language and payments. EF's English Proficiency Index 2025 ranks Argentina 26th (score 575), from a self-selected test. The BCRA counted 117.2 million interoperable QR payments in August 2026, and card payments fell (see daily life in Argentina).
Distance. Press reports from April to July 2026 said Delta and United would withdraw nonstops during Ezeiza runway works planned for late October and early November; reports give different dates. Facts that bear on this: time zone. Argentina is 1 hour ahead of US Eastern time during US daylight time and 2 hours ahead during standard time (arithmetic from UTC-3).
Strikes and security. The CGT had called four general strikes since December 2023, the latest on February 19, 2026 (Econoblog). Theft in public space is the main risk in advisories: see is Argentina safe to live in. Climate. Numbeo's user-submitted Climate Index is 95.33, labeled very high.
How others rate it. Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index 2025 gives Argentina a score of 36 of 100 and rank 104 of 182. How others rate it. The World Happiness Report 2026 ranks Argentina 44th of 136 (score 6.430; the report's range for that rank is 34 to 55).
University. DNU 366/2025 remains published. The Cámara Nacional Electoral declared it null on June 30, 2026 in one citizenship case; the government's appeal is before the Supreme Court, which had not ruled as of October 7, 2026 (Infobae). It allows state universities to set fees for foreigners without permanent residency; Perfil reported on July 23, 2026 that no university had begun charging. University. Undergraduate study at public universities is free for citizens and for foreigners with permanent residency (Perfil, July 23, 2026).

How have surveys and indexes ranked Argentina?

Every entry is one organization's measure, with its own method and sample.

Source and year Argentina result What it measures, and a limit
Institute for Economics and Peace, Global Peace Index 2026 (163 countries) 72nd, score 1.922 A composite country index of peacefulness, not a crime rate. The report attributes part of Argentina's 2026 deterioration to protest unrest after the austerity program. The 2025 edition ranked Argentina 46th (score 1.768). The 2026 report compares with a restated 2025 table and shows a fall of 20 places and a worsening of 0.111 in score
World Happiness Report 2026 (Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, Gallup, UN; 2023 to 2025 average) 44th of 136, score 6.430 (the report's range for that rank is 34 to 55; Uruguay 31st, Brazil 32nd, Chile 50th) Residents' evaluation of their own lives, not expats'
Transparency International, Corruption Perceptions Index 2025 Score 36 of 100, rank 104 of 182, down 1 point An index published by Transparency International, so one organization's score
EF English Proficiency Index 2025 26th, score 575 (global average 488) A self-selected online test; it does not measure English in shops or offices.
Numbeo, country page updated October 12, 2026 Quality of Life 126.29; Purchasing Power 51.79 (low); Health Care 67.84 (high); Climate 95.33 (very high); Cost of Living 45.44 (low); Property Price to Income 11.68 User-submitted; the Cost of Living Index is relative to a baseline city (New York City at 100). How high is inflation, and is Argentina expensive to live in?

INDEC's September 2026 figures come from Infobae, October 13, 2026.

Measure September 2026
Monthly inflation 1.9%
12 months 33.4%
January to September 23.6%
Housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels, in the month 3.1%
Restaurants and hotels, in the month 1.1%
Greater Buenos Aires and Pampeana; Patagonia, in the month 2.0%; 1.4%

The August figures were 1.7% for the month, 33.5% over 12 months and 21.3% for January to August. The 23.6% figure is the total for January to September, and the 12-month figure is 33.4%. INDEC's next release is reported for November 12.

Whether Argentina is expensive depends on the measure. Vendor estimates for a couple in Buenos Aires run from about USD 1,400 to 3,000 a month including rent (WhereNext, May 2026; Expats Argentina, September 2026). Both are vendor or content sites rather than official statistics, and most of the range assumes little private health cover: a two-person OSDE 210 plan alone lists at about USD 678 a month (Prepagaya, October 2026, two people aged 36 and over at ARS 520,047 each, at ARS 1,535 per US dollar). Fundar's index (Infobae, July 8, 2026) put Argentina at the Latin American average in March 2026: dearer than the region in restaurants, clothing, communications, recreation and home equipment, with transport dearer since April, and cheaper in food, health, education and housing. IDECBA, the City statistics office, reports that 25.4% of Argenprop listings of one to five rooms were priced in dollars on average in the second quarter of 2026, mainly in the northern comunas. Numbeo's index above is user-submitted. The components, with sources and dates, are in cost of living in Argentina and cost of living in Buenos Aires.

Income currency changes the reading. Infobae (September 21, 2026) compared 33.5% peso inflation over 12 months to August with a 2.6% rise in the wholesale dollar and described the result as roughly 30% "inflation in dollars" over the year. That comparison predates the September CPI of 33.4%, and the wholesale rate is not the rate a resident pays. Whether a peso income keeps up depends on how it is adjusted, which varies by employer and contract.

What does the exchange rate regime mean for a newcomer?

The BCRA moved the wholesale rate to a band system on April 11, 2025, and individuals can buy dollars in the official market. La Nación (August 2, 2026) reports that a 90-day cross restriction remains between official purchases and MEP or CCL operations (Comunicación A 8336). As of October 9, 2026, El Cronista showed the Banco Nación official rate at ARS 1,485 buy and ARS 1,535 sell and the blue at ARS 1,520 and ARS 1,540, a gap of 0.32% by El Cronista's calculation. The gap moves from day to day. Rules for non-residents moving money in or out are separate, and the blue dollar page and paying for land in Argentina from abroad cover them.

What do bureaucracy and payment access involve?

According to Baenegocios (December 24, 2025), ARCA General Resolution 5803/2025 replaced the CDI with the CUIT from March 2, 2026, with a provisional CUIT of up to two years for foreigners without a DNI who live in Argentina and a representative with an Argentine address for non-residents. ARCA's older CDI page still describes the CDI, so ask the bank or notary which ID they accept. Banks usually ask for a DNI plus a CUIL or CUIT, proof of address and sometimes proof of income (Rio Times). The Rio Times also reports that fintech accounts from Mercado Pago, Ualá and Brubank are built around the DNI. Several City procedures ask for a miBA login. Requirements and waiting times vary by procedure, so each office or bank can confirm its current list. The steps are in the Argentina expat guide.

What does healthcare charging mean for non-permanent residents?

Resolution 1066/2026 of the Ministry of Health, in force since August 12, 2026, covers foreigners without permanent residence at national hospitals for non-emergency care. They must show valid insurance covering the service or pay in advance at the hospital's fee schedule. Emergencies are not charged in advance, though costs can be billed afterward. Provincial and City hospitals set their own rules, and according to Chequeado (August 11, 2026) the City has charged since March 2025. The text does not name tourists or temporary residents, so the general rule applies by implication (Derecho en Zapatillas). Private plans have their own prices, listed in cost of living in Argentina; OSDE 210 for age 36 and over listed at ARS 520,047 per person per month in October 2026 (Prepagaya), about USD 339; this is one comparator's list price, and others differ.

What do imported goods cost?

ARCA's courier notice (October 6, 2026) sets a USD 400 franchise per import, usable up to 5 times a year, with duty on the part above USD 400; the regime has changed several times since late 2024 and El Cronista reported a further change on July 29, 2026, so check ARCA's current rules; the notice's table is in daily life in Argentina.

How do distance and strikes weigh in?

Ezeiza is the long-haul airport. Press reports from April to July 2026 described Delta and United withdrawing nonstops, American cutting Miami from 3 to 2 daily and LATAM reportedly suspending Buenos Aires-Miami during the runway works, and reports give different dates. Airline schedules after the works should be checked before booking.

Econoblog (February 18, 2026) described the February 19 strike as 24 hours long, with trains and buses expected to stop. Other transport strikes also occur.

What about safety?

Crime figures, advisories and hazards are on one page: is Argentina safe to live in.

Which pros and cons matter for whom?

The items people cite as reasons not to move are not equally heavy for every reader. The table lists which evidence above bears on each circumstance; it does not weigh them.

If this applies Evidence that bears on it
Fixed or limited budget 33.4% inflation (September); Infobae's roughly 30% "inflation in dollars" compares August inflation with the dollar to September 21, 2026; vendor couple budgets of USD 1,400 to 3,000 including rent
Health needs Hospital charging for non-permanent residents, Medicare not applying overseas, prepaga list prices
Little Spanish EF's English ranking, a self-selected test; the paperwork steps for the CUIT and bank accounts
Income in dollars Dollar prices in 25.4% of Argenprop listings of one to five rooms (second quarter of 2026), exchange rate of ARS 1,535 on October 9, the band system and 90-day restriction
Income in pesos Whether it adjusts to 33.4% annual inflation
Frequent travel to North America Ezeiza works, time zone 1 or 2 hours ahead of US Eastern
Buying goods from abroad The USD 400 franchise and duty on the part above it

For retirees, the pros and cons add pension and residency questions. Retiree residency (pensionado or rentista) requires income of five minimum wages a month per applicant: ARS 1,956,000 for October 2026, with the minimum wage at ARS 391,200 and changing monthly (Resolution 4/2026). Retire in Argentina covers pensions, taxes and healthcare for that reader, and Argentina pensionado and rentista residency covers the routes. A reader comparing places can use best places to live in Argentina, and one planning the move can use how to move to Argentina from the US.
