Daily life in Argentina in 2026: payments, transport, holidays and paperwork

General information, not legal, immigration or tax advice. Rules, exchange rates and prices change and every case has its own details. Before you pay, sign or apply for residency, check the current rules with an Argentine notary (escribano), lawyer or accountant.

Quick answer Argentina runs on UTC-3 all year with no clock change, uses type I plugs at 220 V, and has a payment system where interoperable QR payments reached 117.2 million in August 2026 (BCRA). Prices move fast: INDEC reported 1.9% inflation for September 2026 and 33.4% over 12 months. The remaining 2026 holidays start with Monday, November 9, which is national. Bank hours, ride-hailing rules, driver's licenses and import costs differ by place and change by decree, so each rule below carries its date and its limit.

Terms used: a feriado is a public holiday, CABA is the City of Buenos Aires, the subte is the Buenos Aires metro, the cubierto is a table charge, and the BCRA, INDEC and ARCA are the central bank, the statistics institute and the tax and customs agency. ENACOM is the telecommunications regulator, ANAC the civil aviation authority, ANMAT the drug and medical-products regulator, CBU a bank account number and CDI the tax ID that the CUIT replaced. Dollar conversions on this page use ARS 1,535 per US dollar, the Banco Nación selling rate on October 9, 2026 (El Cronista), and are rounded arithmetic. At the buying rate of ARS 1,485 the dollar figures are about 3.4% higher.

What time zone and calendar does Argentina follow?

Argentina is on UTC-3 all year. The IANA time zone database, which records civil time rules, shows UTC-3 for Buenos Aires since 2000 and no daylight-saving rules after the period that ended in March 2009. A bill to move to UTC-4 passed the Chamber of Deputies on August 21, 2025 and, as far as reports show, has not been approved by the Senate; Congress would have to pass it before clocks change. Because the United States changes its clocks, the gap changes: Argentina is 1 hour ahead of US Eastern time during US daylight time and 2 hours ahead during US standard time (arithmetic from the UTC offsets).

The holiday calendar can change by decree. Chequeado listed the 2026 national holidays in January, and a decree published on September 28, 2026 added days for the visit of Pope Leo XIV (November 8 to 11, to Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján). The remaining 2026 dates from October 14 are below.

Date What Where it applies
Mon, November 9 Holiday for the papal visit (Decreto 1103/2026) Whole country
Tue, November 10 Holiday for the papal visit (Decreto 1103/2026) City of Buenos Aires and Córdoba province only
Wed, November 11 Holiday for the papal visit (Decreto 1103/2026) Buenos Aires province only
Mon, November 23 Soberanía Nacional (Friday, November 20, moved to Monday under the movable-holiday rule) Whole country, per Chequeado's January list
Mon, December 7 Día no laborable con fines turísticos (a non-working day for tourism) Public sector suspends activity; private employers decide
Tue, December 8 Inmaculada Concepción Whole country
Fri, December 25 Christmas Whole country

Chequeado counts long weekends of November 21 to 23, December 5 to 8 and December 25 to 27. The decree does not say how the November 10 and 11 holidays apply to people who live in one jurisdiction and work in another. Chequeado reports that official sources said the holiday follows the employer's jurisdiction.

What do plugs, water and internet look like?

Electricity. The tourism site argentina.travel (June 3, 2025) calls type I, with three flat pins in a V, the only official and mandatory plug, with 220 V and 50 Hz. Type C appears in some homes and hotels but is not standard. A dual-voltage device (110 to 240 V) needs only an adapter, and a 110 V-only device needs a converter.

Tap water. In the Buenos Aires metro area (the City plus 26 partidos, the surrounding municipalities), the concessionaire AySA must guarantee water quality through systematic physical, chemical and bacteriological testing. The regulator ERAS supervises and runs its own sampling with an accredited private laboratory. The framework lists 39 parameters, AySA samples about 750 points a year, and the limits are in Annex A of Ley 26.221 as amended by Decreto 493/2025. Those rules cover AySA's area. For another city or a rural address, ask the local provider or its regulator for current results. AySA's price is in cost of living in Buenos Aires.

Internet and phones. argentina.travel (May 21, 2025) puts fixed broadband in major cities at about 50 to 300 Mbps. A prepaid mobile line can be registered by a non-resident foreign citizen with a passport (ENACOM Resolution 263/2023); a resident should ask the operator what it needs. Prices and operator offers are in cost of living in Buenos Aires.

How do people pay for things?

The BCRA's monthly retail payments report for August 2026 shows QR and transfer payments growing and ATM withdrawals falling; card payments also fell (July figures).

Measure Value Period
Interoperable QR payments by transfer 117.2 million payments (up 67.5% year on year), worth ARS 2.9 trillion August 2026
Share of payments by transfer that began with a QR code 99.1% August 2026
Payers using bank accounts (CBU) and payment accounts (CVU, i.e. wallets) 52.7% and 47.3% August 2026
Instant peso transfers 779 million, worth ARS 96 trillion (up 20.3% in number) August 2026
ATM withdrawals 41 million from 16,662 ATMs, down 28% in number year on year; average withdrawal ARS 118,300 (about USD 77) July 2026
Debit card transactions; credit card payments 172 million (down 8.4%); 159.3 million (down 9.2%) July 2026

The report counts payments by channel. It does not say what share of small retail purchases is still paid in cash, so the figures show direction, not the cash share. The Rio Times reports that fintech accounts from Mercado Pago, Ualá and Brubank are built around the DNI, the national ID, so a newcomer should ask each provider what a passport allows. The US State Department's country page (updated July 16, 2026) says to show a passport to exchange money, to exchange only at banks, hotels or storefront exchange offices, that some US bank ATM cards fail at certain machines and that daily limits may be lower than in the US. The blue dollar page covers the dated rates and the legal ways to get pesos.

Table charges. Derecho en Zapatillas (updated 2019) summarizes City Ley 4407 as allowing a cubierto charge only when the restaurant provides bread, water and modified salt, and only for diners over 12. The rule may have changed since, so the menu and the City consumer office can confirm.

What are bank hours, and how does paperwork work?

Banks in Buenos Aires province generally serve the public from 10:00 to 15:00 under Decreto 3320/99. Decreto 2894/2025 (November 29, 2025) set 8:00 to 13:00 from December 1, 2025 to March 22, 2026 in the municipalities of its annex. Both are provincial decrees. Hours in the City, in other provinces and nationally may differ, so check the branch's posted hours and the summer schedule before planning a visit.

For procedures, Mi Argentina is the national digital profile for managing procedures, booking appointments and holding credentials. Many City procedures ask for a miBA login, the City's own account. The tax ID needed for banking changed in 2026: ARCA General Resolution 5803/2025 replaced the CDI with the CUIT from March 2, 2026, and a bank can say which ID it accepts. The Argentina expat guide explains how a foreigner without a DNI applies.

How do you get around a city and the country?

Subte and buses. Subterráneos de Buenos Aires S.E. runs lines A, B, C, D, E and H plus the Premetro. The City page lists stations closed for renovation at the time of reading: Medrano (B), Lavalle (C), and Entre Ríos and Urquiza (E). Line F has not been built. Perfil's service notes of August 2026 gave weekday hours of 5:30 to 23:30; the operator can confirm first and last trains for each line. Fares, taxi tariffs and app price ranges are in cost of living in Buenos Aires.

Ride-hailing apps. Their legal status in the City is disputed. The City's contentious-administrative appeals court ruled in early May 2026 (Mi Periódico, May 8, 2026) that Uber, DiDi and Cabify in practice operate as paid passenger transport and cannot operate outside the regulatory framework. Their drivers must hold a professional license and passenger-transport insurance and meet controls equivalent to taxis and remises, and the ruling stops applying once the City Legislature passes a specific law. It does not ban the apps. Whether the ruling was appealed is a question for the City courts or a lawyer. According to La Voz de San Justo, Córdoba's city council approved an ordinance regulating the apps on August 14, 2025; the city can say whether its rules are in force.

Long-distance buses. The CNRT (Comisión Nacional de Regulación del Transporte) supervises long-distance bus and train services nationwide and takes complaints through control.cnrt.gob.ar or 0800-333-0300.

Domestic flights. Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSMART carried most domestic passengers in May 2026 (68% and about 24% of 1,131,207, ANAC data reported by Sir Chandler). Flybondi was in crisis in 2026: Brazil's civil aviation authority barred its ticket sales to Florianópolis, Maceió and Salvador from July 29, 2026 after it canceled 79% of its scheduled Brazil flights from July 1 to 27 (Aviación al Día). Whether it is flying on a given date is a question for the airline.

Driving. The US State Department's country page (updated July 16, 2026) says an Argentine or international license is needed to drive and describes driving as more dangerous than in the US. The City issues licenses to foreigners with a City address, and the documents depend on migration status. The City's page for exchanging a foreign license lists current licenses from Spain, Italy, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Chile, with a legality certificate. It also asks for a license that is current or expired for less than one year, a DNI with a City address and a miBA account. As printed on that page on October 14, 2026 and set by the tariff law, the fees are ARS 42,230 plus ARS 10,150 for the CENAT (Certificado Nacional de Antecedentes de Tránsito, the national traffic-record certificate). The United States is not on the City's exchange list; ask the City licensing office what applies. How to move to Argentina from the US covers the move itself.

Flights from North America. Press reports from April to July 2026 said Delta and United would withdraw nonstops to Buenos Aires during runway works at Ezeiza airport planned for late October and early November, and reports give different dates. Check the airline's schedule before booking.

How do strikes and protests affect daily plans?

According to Econoblog (February 18, 2026), the CGT union confederation had called four general strikes since December 2023, the latest on February 19, 2026 for 24 hours, with trains and buses expected to stop. Other transport strikes also occur. Protest advice is on the safety page.

What are health and pharmacy basics?

The CDC's Argentina page (reviewed September 3, 2026) sets Level 1, "Practice Usual Precautions". A travel-medicine clinic can apply the CDC's vaccine advice to a given person. The State Department says "We do not pay medical bills" and that Medicare does not apply overseas. The CDC advises bringing the medicines needed from home, with extra for delays, because some medicines abroad may be substandard or counterfeit, and says to check with Argentina's embassy that the prescriptions are legal to bring into the country.

For pharmacy shopping, iProfesional reports that ANMAT Disposición 4714/2026, in force from July 29, 2026, moved specified forms of ten active ingredients to over-the-counter sale; products outside the list keep their prescription condition. Rules for charging foreigners at public hospitals are in the Argentina expat guide.

What are social customs and language like?

According to Wikipedia's "Culture of Argentina", the main dialect is Rioplatense Spanish and Argentina is one of the few Spanish-speaking countries that almost universally uses voseo, the "vos" form instead of "tú". EF's English Proficiency Index 2025 ranks Argentina 26th with a score of 575 against a global average of 488, from a self-selected online test. The index does not measure English in shops or offices.

According to Census 2022 (reported by Chequeado), 1,933,463 residents were born abroad, 4.2% of the population in private dwellings, and 73.1% of them live in the City or Buenos Aires province (arithmetic: 21.7% plus 51.4%). That count does not measure the size of an English-speaking community.

What do imports and shipping cost?

ARCA's courier notice (October 6, 2026) sets the personal-use franchise below.

Rule Value
Franchise per import for personal use USD 400, usable up to 5 times a year
Limit per shipment USD 3,000 (ARCA's notice says "per flight"; press reads it as per shipment)
Annual ceiling ARCA's notice says up to USD 15,000 a year through these platforms (5 x USD 3,000); duties still apply to the part above USD 400, as the rows below show
Taxes on the first USD 400 VAT and internal taxes only
Taxes on the excess over USD 400 Also import duty and the statistics fee
Other limits Up to 3 identical units per shipment, under 50 kg, no commercial purpose
After five uses The courier notifies the buyer to pay all applicable taxes

El Cronista reported on May 12, 2026 a 50% rate on the excess over USD 400, and 50% on the full value from the sixth shipment. ARCA's page does not state a rate, so confirm the rate with ARCA or a customs broker. ARCA's courier regime has changed several times since late 2024, and El Cronista reported on July 29, 2026 that ARCA changed the regime again and removed the USD 3,000 cap for one group; ARCA or a customs broker can say which rule applies on the shipping date. Moving household goods is a different process, covered in how to move to Argentina from the US.

What does inflation do to daily prices?

INDEC's September 2026 release (reported by Infobae on October 13, 2026) shows monthly inflation of 1.9% and 33.4% over 12 months. In August the figures were 1.7% for the month and 33.5% over 12 months. The cumulative figure for January to September is 23.6%, and some headlines mislabel it as annual. Within September, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels rose 3.1%, and restaurants and hotels 1.1%. The next release is reported for November 12. The peso prices behind these rates are in cost of living in Argentina and cost of living in Buenos Aires. The trade-offs are in pros and cons of living in Argentina.
