Living and costs
Cost of living in Argentina in 2026: what it costs, by component
General information, not legal, immigration or tax advice. Rules, exchange rates and prices change and every case has its own details. Before you pay, sign or apply for residency, check the current rules with an Argentine notary (escribano), lawyer or accountant.
Quick answer A couple in Buenos Aires budgets about USD 1,400 to 3,000 a month including rent, and one person about USD 1,300 to 1,900, according to vendor estimates (WhereNext, May 2026; Expats Argentina, September 2026). No official statistic gives a single figure. Most of these ranges assume little private health cover: a two-person OSDE 210 plan alone lists at about USD 678 a month (Prepagaya, October 2026, at ARS 1,535 per US dollar). Peso inflation was 33.4% over the 12 months to September 2026 (INDEC, published October 13). Infobae calls about 30% "inflation in dollars" over the year to September 21, 2026, comparing 33.5% peso inflation in the 12 months to August with a 2.6% rise in the wholesale dollar. Every figure below carries its date.
Terms used: INDEC is the national statistics institute, IDECBA is the Buenos Aires City statistics office, Defensoría del Pueblo is the City ombudsman, a prepaga is a private health plan, ambiente is the room count in rental listings, expensas are building fees, comunas are the city's 15 administrative districts, ENREGE is the new national energy regulator, R1 is a residential gas category and SUBE is the public transport card. Peso amounts are written ARS and dollar amounts USD. Dollar conversions on this page use ARS 1,535 per US dollar, the Banco Nación selling rate on October 9, 2026 (El Cronista). They are rounded arithmetic, not source figures. The selling rate is used; at the buying rate of ARS 1,485 the dollar figures are about 3.4% higher.
Why have prices in dollars gone up in Argentina?
Peso prices rose 1.7% to 2.1% a month from July to September 2026 while the exchange rate moved little, so the same peso price costs more dollars each month.
| Measure | Value | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly inflation | 1.9% (August: 1.7%; July: 2.1%) | September 2026 | INDEC, reported by Infobae and Chequeado |
| 12-month inflation | 33.4% (August: 33.5%; July: 33.8%) | September 2026 | INDEC, reported by Infobae, Chequeado and Buenos Aires Times |
| Inflation since January | 23.6% (to August: 21.3%) | January to September 2026 | INDEC, reported by Infobae and Chequeado |
| Wholesale dollar, one-year change | ARS 1,514 against ARS 1,475, up 2.6% | September 21, 2026 against September 19, 2025 | Infobae |
| 12-month change, housing | 49.1% | August 2026 | Argus Media, derived from INDEC |
| 12-month change, transport; food and drinks; hospitality | 38.2%; 34.9%; 34.6% | August 2026 | Argus Media, derived from INDEC |
Infobae describes the gap between 33.5% inflation (12 months to August) and a 2.6% rise in the dollar as roughly 30% "inflation in dollars" over a year. That comparison dates from September 21, 2026 and uses the August inflation figure (33.5%); with the September figure (33.4%) the result is also about 30% (arithmetic). The BCRA (central bank) statistics series shows a wholesale quote of ARS 1,517 on October 9, 2026. INDEC published the September figure on October 13, 2026: 1.9% for the month, 33.4% over 12 months and 23.6% from January to September (Infobae). Some headlines print 23.6% as an annual rate, but it covers nine months.
Argentina is not simply cheap: Fundar's index (Infobae, July 8, 2026) found it at the Latin American average overall in March 2026 and dearer in 6 of 11 consumption groups (five in March, with transport dearer since April), and IERAL (El Argentino, September 9, 2026) found food and drink dearer than in nine comparison countries in 48% of cases in August 2026.
What are the components of a monthly budget?
The table gives one dated reference per component, mostly for Buenos Aires. Rent for other cities is in the city comparison below, and the Buenos Aires detail is in cost of living in Buenos Aires.
| Component | Reference price (ARS) | USD at ARS 1,535 (El Cronista, October 9) | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rent, one-room apartment | Median asking rent 650,000 | About 423 | September 2026 | mob.ar, City of Buenos Aires listings in pesos |
| Rent, two-room apartment | Median asking rent 780,000 | About 508 | September 2026 | mob.ar |
| Electricity, gas, water | 49,770; 49,370; 42,576 per month for an average household without subsidies | About 32; 32; 28 | September 2026 | IIEP UBA-CONICET, reported by Infobae |
| Food, older couple who own their home | Minimum food basket 456,411 | About 297 | August 2026 | IDECBA |
| Transport | Bus minimum fare 920.48; subte trip 1,817 | About 0.60; 1.18 | October 2026 | Infobae and El Cronista |
| Mobile plan (10 GB or more) and home internet | 38,667 and 47,187 per month | About 25 and 31 | October 7, 2026 | Numbeo, crowdsourced |
| Health plan, OSDE 210, age 36 and over | 520,047 per person per month | About 339 | October 2026 | Prepagaya, list price |
| Going out | Inexpensive restaurant meal 28,847; cappuccino 5,860; mid-range meal for two without drinks 98,588 | About 19; 4; 64 | October 7, 2026 | Numbeo, crowdsourced |
Numbeo is a crowdsourced site and its figures are reported attributions, not measurements. The September 2026 IIEP averages follow the end of winter, so they are lower than in July. Some prices are set in dollars regardless of peso inflation: IDECBA reports that 25.4% of Argenprop listings of one to five rooms were priced in dollars in the second quarter of 2026, mainly in the northern comunas.
What do vendors estimate for a couple?
The estimates below are vendor figures, listed one by one because they do not cover the same items.
| Publisher | Estimate (USD per month) | As of | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhereNext | Couple, Recoleta or Palermo: 1,800 to 2,500; San Telmo or Almagro: 1,400 to 1,900 | May 2026 | Rent, utilities, groceries, restaurants, local transit and private healthcare (USD 120 to 300 per couple); the page gives no method or exchange rate |
| Expats Argentina | Couple in Buenos Aires: 2,200 to 3,000; one person: 1,300 to 1,900 (the same one-person range appears in an Argentina Visa Law guide, a law firm that sells visa services) | September 2026 | Planning ranges including rent, built from Numbeo, Zonaprop and official tariffs |
| Golden Harbors | Retiree couple: about 2,670, including about 700 for healthcare | June 2, 2026 | The figure is soft: it uses about ARS 1,400 per dollar, older than today's rate |
| International Living | Couple: 2,000 to 2,500 | Updated July 16, 2026 | Country-level figure in an article on rising destinations, with no breakdown for Argentina |
| Numbeo | One person excluding rent: 883.70; family of four excluding rent: 3,151.90 | October 7, 2026 | Crowdsourced basket; rent excluded |
The Buenos Aires couple estimates run from USD 1,400 to 3,000 a month (the International Living figure is country-level), and health insurance is usually missing or low in them. Expats Argentina builds its ranges from Numbeo and other listed inputs, so it is not independent of them. Residency income rules are a separate matter: the pensionado and rentista routes ask for five minimum wages, ARS 1,956,000 a month for October 2026 under Resolution 4/2026 of the minimum wage council, explained in pensionado and rentista residency. That threshold is not a budget.
What do the official baskets include?
Three official or semi-official sources give dated peso figures, for different months. None is a retiree's shopping bill.
| Basket | Value (ARS) | As of | What it includes and excludes |
|---|---|---|---|
| INDEC food basket (CBA), Greater Buenos Aires, household of four | 726,469 (about USD 473) | August 2026 | Foods meeting energy and protein needs at a minimum diet; the indigence line |
| INDEC total basket (CBT), same household | 1,605,497 | August 2026 | The CBA plus non-food goods and services; the poverty line |
| IDECBA, older couple who own their home: food (CBA) and total (CBT) | 456,411 (about USD 297) and 828,871 (about USD 540) | August 2026 | Food, then non-food items for an owner; excludes rent, a prepaga and discretionary spending |
| Defensoría del Pueblo, retired couple up to 74, owners without a prepaga | 1,674,920 (about USD 1,091) | July 2026 | Food, housing, health, transport, maintenance and personal expenses |
| Defensoría, owners with a prepaga | 2,953,995 (about USD 1,924) | July 2026 | Same list, with a private plan |
| Defensoría, renters | 2,471,203 (about USD 1,610) | July 2026 | Same list, with rent |
The INDEC figures are reported by Perfil and Mercado. IDECBA's come from its price report for August 2026, table C.1. The Defensoría figures are reported by Perfil on September 11, 2026, which gave a rise of 41.9% over the year for the owner basket without a prepaga. EconoBlog reported on September 24, 2026 that the August baskets were ARS 1,714,568 for owners and ARS 2,526,219 for renters, with food at ARS 638,994 in the renters' basket. These August figures come from a secondary source, and the August owner basket may or may not include a prepaga.
The renters' basket of about USD 1,610 (July 2026) is lower than the vendor couple ranges. The two measure different things, and neither covers a foreigner's furnished dollar rent.
How much do health costs add?
Prepagas set their own prices. Decree 102/2025, in force since February 18, 2025, lets them change fees freely during the contract, requires 30 days' notice, and says the fee of the last age band may not exceed three times the fee of the first band. Plans for the last age band must be available with no maximum age (text of the decree on the Consejo Salta site; Derecho en Zapatillas).
| Plan (list price, individual, Buenos Aires area) | Age band | ARS per month | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| OSDE 210 | 0 to 27 | 208,430 | October 2026 |
| OSDE 210 | 28 to 35 | 320,904 | October 2026 |
| OSDE 210 | 36 and over | 520,047 | October 2026 |
| Swiss Medical SMG20 | 0 to 35 | 353,333 | October 2026 |
| Swiss Medical SMG20 | 56 to 60 | 827,602 | October 2026 |
| Swiss Medical SMG20 | 61 and over | 1,042,331 | October 2026 |
Source for the table: Prepagaya, a price comparator that says its lists are the official ones filed with the health superintendency. Other comparators differ. For OSDE 210 at about age 30 they show ARS 290,411 (MiObraSocial, October 2026), ARS 314,922 (Argentina Visa Law, September 2026) and ARS 284,997 (Expats Argentina, September 2026), so any single price is approximate. The ratios in the table stay under the cap: Swiss Medical's top band is 2.95 times its first, OSDE 210's is 2.50 times (arithmetic on Prepagaya's lists). Monthly rises in October 2026 ran from 1.7% (Federada Salud, Accord) to 2.9% (Omint) among the companies Infobae lists.
Three limits apply. Prices for ages 60 and above vary by plan, so a written quote at the applicant's age is needed from each prepaga. Feather Insurance, an international insurer that competes with local plans, says enrollment usually requires a DNI (the national ID that comes with residency), so a foreigner without a DNI should ask each prepaga in writing whether enrollment is possible. Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions are not covered by any price list used here, so the applicant should ask each prepaga for its conditions in writing before enrolling.
International plans are priced separately: Feather's article of August 13, 2026 lists a Standard plan from EUR 104 a month at age 30 to EUR 539 at 70, on a January 2026 rate card, with new members accepted up to age 75 and existing conditions assessed individually.
Public hospitals follow a separate rule. According to Derecho en Zapatillas, Resolution 1066/2026 (in force since August 12, 2026) requires foreigners without permanent residence to show valid health insurance or pay the hospital's fee in advance for non-urgent care at national hospitals. Emergency care is given without prior payment but is billed after the patient is stabilized. Provincial and city hospitals set their own rules. The Argentina expat guide covers it.
How do Mendoza, Córdoba and Bariloche compare with Buenos Aires?
Numbeo lists the same items for each city, but the pages were updated on different dates: Buenos Aires on October 7, 2026, Mendoza on September 30 and Córdoba on August 29. The figures are crowdsourced and in dollars, so the three columns are not like-for-like.
| Numbeo item (USD) | Buenos Aires (Oct 7) | Mendoza (Sept 30) | Córdoba (Aug 29) |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom, city center, rent | 770.79 | 550.67 | 483.80 |
| One person, excluding rent | 883.70 | 783.80 | 823.00 |
| Inexpensive restaurant meal | 19.02 | 11.00 | 13.65 |
Numbeo's comparison tool uses its whole rent index, not the one-bedroom row above, and shows Mendoza's rent 36.9% lower and Córdoba's 36.5% lower than Buenos Aires. The one-bedroom city-center rows above are 28.6% and 37.2% lower. In the comparison tool, groceries show no difference in Mendoza and are 2.4% lower in Córdoba, and restaurants are 15.8% lower in Mendoza and 14.7% lower in Córdoba.
Local rent sources in pesos are listed one by one because they use different methods and months.
| City | Rent (ARS per month) | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buenos Aires | Two-room apartment, 898,154 | September 2026 | Zonaprop Index, reported by Infobae |
| Mendoza (city) | One bedroom, 557,632; two to three bedrooms, 754,027 | August 2026 | InmoUp, average asking prices |
| Mendoza (Luján de Cuyo) | One bedroom, 594,697; two to three bedrooms, 868,857 | August 2026 | InmoUp |
| Córdoba (city) | One room, 630,000; two rooms, 650,000, plus expensas of about 130,000 | August 2026 | Roomix, base rent |
| Bariloche | One room, 850,000; two rooms, 1,000,000, plus expensas of about 100,000 | August 2026 | Roomix, base rent |
InmoUp's "two to three bedrooms" is one group, not a two-bedroom figure. Roomix is a content site. In pesos, Bariloche rents are the only ones of the four at or above Buenos Aires levels (Roomix's August two-room figure against Zonaprop's September one, which are different months and methods), and Bariloche's long-term supply is thinnest in January and July when owners favor tourists (Roomix, August 2026).
Bariloche also carries a heating cost. Camuzzi's tariff valid from August 1, 2026 (ENREGE resolution 373/2026) was ARS 10,561.49 a month fixed plus ARS 250.11 per cubic meter of piped gas for category R1, before taxes and without the targeted subsidy. Gas tariffs rose on average 2.46% nationally in October (Infobae), so the current table is slightly higher; the Camuzzi website has it. Camuzzi announced in December 2025 that new gas connections would reopen from January 5, 2026, and the utility can say whether a given address can connect. Bariloche heating costs depend on whether the address has piped gas and on the winter fuel used; ask the gas utility and local suppliers for current prices.
WhereNext's mid-tier couple budgets (May 2026) are USD 1,300 to 1,900 for Mendoza, USD 1,400 to 2,200 for Bariloche and USD 1,200 to 1,800 for Córdoba, and Expats Argentina (September 2026) gives USD 1,700 to 2,300 for Córdoba. WhereNext assumes only USD 120 to 300 a month of private health cover per couple, well below the OSDE 210 list prices above, and neither vendor publishes its method. Health plan prices do not drop in the interior: OSDE 210 at age 30 was ARS 319,025 for Córdoba and Mendoza and ARS 320,904 for Buenos Aires in October 2026 (Prepagaya). The best places to live in Argentina page compares climate, hospitals and hazards for the same cities. Rents for Mendoza and Córdoba differ between the two pages because their sources and months differ.
How do foreign cards and exchange rates affect what you pay?
As of October 9, 2026, El Cronista showed the Banco Nación official rate at ARS 1,485 buy and ARS 1,535 sell and the blue at ARS 1,520 and ARS 1,540, a gap of 0.32% by El Cronista's calculation. The 30% card charge is aimed at Argentine residents' card spending abroad, so a foreign-issued card holder should ask the card issuer whether it applies; the blue dollar page explains the rates and the legal ways to get pesos.
How can current prices be checked?
- Inflation and baskets: INDEC publishes monthly inflation and the national baskets. IDECBA's monthly price reports include the City baskets (the August 2026 report is linked in Sources).
- Exchange rates: the BCRA statistics series, the BCRA band page, and trackers such as Bluelytics.
- Electricity and gas: the ENRE tariff table for each month, now moving to ENREGE; Metrogas for Buenos Aires and Camuzzi for Bariloche.
- Taxi: the City government taxi tariff page.
- Rent: the Zonaprop Index, the mob.ar report, InmoUp for Mendoza and Roomix for Córdoba and Bariloche. Asking prices are not signed contracts.
- Health plans: the prepaga's own quote for the applicant's age, and comparators such as Prepagaya.
