Argentina Digital Nomad Visa: What the Official Rules Say
General information, not legal, immigration or tax advice. Rules, exchange rates and prices change and every case has its own details. Before you pay, sign or apply for residency, check the current rules with an Argentine notary (escribano), lawyer or accountant.
Quick answer Argentina's digital nomad measure is Disposición DNM 758/2022, published on May 11, 2022. It creates a residencia transitoria (transitory residence) valid for up to 180 days, which can be extended once for an equal term, for foreigners who provide services remotely to people or companies based abroad. It sets no minimum income, does not address work for local clients, and is not a route to temporary or permanent residence under the disposición; whether a nomad can later switch is unconfirmed. Tax treatment of a stay of up to about 360 days is unresolved: ask an accountant. Commercial guides that quote income minimums, mandatory insurance or fixed processing times do not match the official text.
Terms used on this page: residencia transitoria (a short-term residence category, different from temporary residence), Migraciones (the national migration authority, Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, DNM), apostille (the Hague Convention certificate that authenticates a foreign document) and ARCA (the national tax agency).
Is there a digital nomad visa in Argentina?
Yes, but it is a permit issued inside the country, not a consular visa. Disposición DNM 758/2022, dated May 10, 2022 and published in the Boletín Oficial on May 11, 2022, creates a transitory residence for nómadas digitales (digital nomads) under article 24, item h) of Migration Law 25.871. The official name of the procedure on argentina.gob.ar is "residencia transitoria como Nómada Digital".
The measure is sometimes cited with the wrong number. The correct reference is 758/2022.
Who can apply?
The disposición reaches nationals of countries that do not need a tourist visa for Argentina, who provide services remotely, by IT or telecommunications means, to people or companies domiciled abroad.
US citizens need no visa for tourism up to 90 days. A law-firm site (Argentina Visa Law) reports the same visa-free regime for Canada, the United Kingdom and EU states, but that is a secondary report, so confirm the nationality with Migraciones.
The text sets no minimum income. It asks for proof of the independent activity and of income, with no amount. The official procedure page lists no health insurance requirement and no income minimum. Several commercial guides state both, along with processing times of a few weeks; none of those conditions appears in the Boletín Oficial text or on the official page.
How long can you stay?
| Stage | Term | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Initial permit | Up to 180 days | Application and documents below |
| One extension | A term identical to the one granted, so up to about 360 days in total | Valid passport, proof of income earned during the stay, Argentine criminal-record certificate, physical presence in Argentina for at least 50% of the period, and the fee |
The extension can be requested once. The text says the presence requirement covers "the period" without further detail, so confirm with Migraciones which period it is measured against. This permit is not a "one-year visa": it is 180 days plus one equal extension.
What documents does the application need?
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Signed application | Names the independent activity, with a short CV |
| Passport | Valid |
| Photo | 4x4 |
| Proof of the activity | A contract, an employer endorsement, certifications, or income or fee receipts, with at least one reference tied to the occupation |
| Fee | A tasa retributiva de servicios (service fee); the amount is not shown on the official page |
| Legalization and translation | Documents are legalized and translated into Spanish and treated as a sworn declaration |
The applicant must be in Argentina and applies directly with Migraciones, not through the RADEX online system. Applicants in the City of Buenos Aires write to asesoramiento@migraciones.gov.ar; applicants elsewhere go to the delegation. For the extension, an Argentine criminal-record certificate is required as well. The fee table of Migraciones has no row named for digital nomads, so check the amount on the official procedure before paying.
Can a digital nomad work for clients in Argentina?
No. The measure covers remote work for clients abroad. It does not address local employment, and Law 25.871, article 52, says transitory residents generally cannot do paid work in Argentina unless Migraciones authorizes it. A nomad who wants local clients or a local job needs a different status.
Does the digital nomad permit lead to residency?
Not under the disposición. It is a transitory category, not temporary residence, and the text contains no path to temporary or permanent residence. A law-firm source (Argentina Visa Law) reports that days spent as a tourist or a transitory resident do not count toward arraigo (the three-year route to permanent residence). Whether a nomad can switch to temporary residence from inside Argentina, or whether any of that time can be counted, is unconfirmed. A migration lawyer can ask the authority before the permit is used as a first step.
| Status | Term | Route to permanent residence |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist | Up to three months, one extension of a similar period | Tourist days do not count toward permanent residence |
| Digital nomad (transitory) | Up to 180 days, extended once | None in the disposición; whether the time counts is unconfirmed |
| Pensionado or rentista (temporary) | One renewable year on the current service pages | Possible through arraigo after three years of temporary residence, with conditions (see the pensionado and rentista page) |
For the retiree categories, see the pensionado and rentista residency rules.
How is a digital nomad taxed in Argentina?
This is unresolved. For foreign nationals, the Income Tax Law (article 116 b) makes someone a tax resident on obtaining permanent residence or after 12 months of stay with temporary migration authorizations. A 180-day transitory stay does not by itself meet the wording "temporary authorizations". Whether about 360 days of transitory permits triggers tax residence is a question for an accountant. Commercial guides conflict: some say more than 180 days brings the same obligations as residents, others say 12 months. Which reading ARCA applies to transitory residents is not confirmed.
A tax resident is taxed on worldwide income, with a credit for analogous taxes paid abroad. A non-resident is taxed only on Argentine-source income. No income tax treaty between the United States and Argentina is in force. The broader picture is in retiring in Argentina and the Argentina expat guide.
What about health insurance at entry?
DNU 366/2025 added an entry declaration of purpose and health insurance (new article 34 of Law 25.871), but its application depends on implementing rules, and none is confirmed as of October 2026. The decree sets no minimum coverage amount. The nomad procedure page itself lists no insurance requirement. Non-permanent residents pay or need insurance for non-emergency care in national-state hospitals: see retirement residency, pensions and healthcare for how the rule works.
Has the digital nomad rule changed since 2022?
The articles of DNU 366/2025 that replaced parts of the migration law do not mention the measure, and commercial guides published in 2026 still describe the 2022 rules. Migraciones now sits under the Ministry of Security. No later disposición amending 758/2022 has been reported as of October 12, 2026. Rules can change by disposición, so read the procedure page on argentina.gob.ar on the day of the application.
What do remote workers need on the ground: internet, SIM and coworking?
Argentina's official tourism site (guide dated May 21, 2025) reports that fixed broadband in major cities runs at about 50 to 300 Mbps, and that the public BA WiFi network is limited to about 5 Mbps. Mobile registration is required by law, and a tourist SIM needs a passport. The carriers named are Claro, which has the widest national coverage, Movistar and Personal. Sources differ on how a foreign-document holder activates an eSIM with Personal, so ask the carrier before arriving.
The same guide lists coworking spaces in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza and Rosario. These are 2025 listings, so confirm that a space is open and what it charges. Where to base yourself is covered in best places to live in Argentina.
Which points are unsettled?
| Point | Status |
|---|---|
| Switching to temporary residence from inside Argentina | Unsettled; a migration lawyer can ask Migraciones |
| Transitory time counting toward the three years for permanent residence | One law-firm source says it does not; Migraciones has not confirmed |
| Application fee | The official page does not show it and the fee table has no nomad row; check the procedure |
| Period the 50% presence rule is measured against | The text says "the period"; confirm with Migraciones |
| Tax residence after about 360 days of transitory permits | Unsettled; ask an accountant |
| Health insurance for the permit | Not listed on the official page; the entry declaration under DNU 366/2025 is separate |
| Whether the permit is still current | Commercial guides in 2026 describe the 2022 rules; no amending disposición has been reported |
What to confirm before arriving
- Whether the nationality is exempt from the tourist visa.
- The current fee and the appointment steps on the official procedure page.
- That the proof of work comes from clients or an employer outside Argentina.
- The apostille and Spanish translation of each foreign document.
- With an accountant, how the stay interacts with tax residence.
